Laser Skin Resurfacing Or Laser Peel Treatment
Laser skin resurfacing or the laser peel treatment is used to primarily rejuvenate the face. Skin resurfacing produces more youthful, smooth, tightened skin, by greatly reducing wrinkles, age spots, stretch marks, scars and acne scars. Laser skin resurfacing has been an anti-aging breakthrough for patients that don’t want a facelift or more invasive surgical procedures.
How is Laser Skin Resurfacing Performed?
Laser resurfacing commonly requires some form of anesthetic. Depending on the level of resurfacing, it will range from a local anesthetic to sedation (awake) or possibly general anesthesia (fully asleep, which is rare). After the anesthetic is administered, the surgeon uses the laser to send short pulses of concentrated light at the skin to be treated.
The laser vaporizes the outer layers of skin in a very precise, predetermined manner. Simultaneously, the lower levels of skin (dermis layer) are heated in order to tighten the skin and stimulate new growth of collagen fibers (the structure or scaffolding of the skin). After the treatment, as the skin heals over the next couple weeks it reforms much smoother and tighter.
What is the Recovery Time for Laser Skin Resurfacing?
Depending on the amount of resurfacing and the level, recovery times will vary. Normally, the recovery time for laser skin resurfacing is no longer than 2 weeks*. Most patients will see some form of swelling on day 2* through day 4*, where it should begin to subside. The swelling is perfectly normal and expected. Some flaking of the skin may occur also, whereas the skin will look red and feel sunburnt.
Patients should apply cold compresses and elevate the treated areas. Medicines and/or cremes may be prescribed to you during pre-op. All post operative instructions should followed as closely as possible to ensure the best results. Like all treatments, the healing or recovery period is extremely important to the outcome. Patients should avoid the sun for at least the first week following the resurfacing treatment.
How Long Does Laser Skin Resurfacing Last?
The results of laser skin resurfacing can last for more than 5 years if proper post operative instructions are followed along with a good skin care process. Touch ups or follow up treatments can also improve and lengthen the results even longer.
