Kybella

What is it?

Kybella is a non-surgical injectable treatment that uses a synthetic form of deoxycholic acid, a naturally occurring substance in the body that helps break down and absorb fat. It is FDA-approved for treating submental fullness, commonly known as a “double chin.” Kybella works by destroying fat cells under the chin, resulting in a more contoured and defined jawline. The benefits of Kybella include a noticeable reduction in chin fat without the need for surgery, minimal downtime, and permanent results, as the treated fat cells are destroyed and cannot regenerate. Multiple treatments may be required, depending on the individual’s goals.

The Process

A Kybella treatment involves a series of injections under the chin using a fine needle to deliver deoxycholic acid, which breaks down fat cells in the targeted area. Before the procedure, a topical numbing cream or ice is often applied to minimize discomfort. The number of injections and treatments varies depending on the patient’s unique anatomy and aesthetic goals, with most individuals requiring two to four sessions spaced about a month apart. Each session typically lasts 15 to 20 minutes.

While Kybella is generally safe, common side effects include swelling, bruising, pain, redness, and areas of hardness around the treatment site. These symptoms usually resolve within a few days to a week. In rare cases, patients may experience nerve injury leading to temporary facial muscle weakness or trouble swallowing, though these effects typically resolve over time.
