What is a PRP treatment like?

Here’s what you can expect during the process:

Blood Draw: The treatment begins with a simple blood draw, similar to what you would experience during a routine blood test. A small amount of your blood is collected, usually from your arm.

Centrifugation: The blood sample is then placed in a centrifuge, a specialized machine that spins the blood at high speeds. This process separates the plasma, which is rich in platelets and growth factors, from the rest of the blood components.

Preparation of PRP: The concentrated platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is carefully extracted and prepared for injection. This PRP solution is what contains the powerful growth factors and proteins that aid in healing.

Injection: The PRP is then injected directly into the injured area, such as a tendon, ligament, or joint, using a fine needle. Your healthcare provider may use ultrasound guidance to ensure precise placement of the injection.

Post-Treatment: After the injection, you can expect some mild swelling or discomfort at the injection site, but this typically subsides within a few days. The entire procedure usually takes about 30-60 minutes, and because it’s minimally invasive, there’s little to no downtime. Most patients can resume their normal activities shortly after the treatment.

Healing Process: Over the following weeks, the PRP works to stimulate the body’s natural healing processes, promoting tissue repair and regeneration in the treated area. Patients typically begin to notice improvements in pain and function within a few weeks, with optimal results often seen after several months.
